Billionaire investor Jared Isaacman has been formally approved as the new administrator of NASA, ending an atypical confirmation journey where Trump nominated him, pulled the nomination, and then renominated him.

Isaacman, an private pilot who became the first private citizen to conduct a spacewalk, is also the first NASA administrator in decades to come straight from outside government.

For many, the success of his tenure will be judged on one key benchmark: its ability to return humans to the Moon in advance of China.

Trump has stated explicitly a goal for the America to establish a sustained presence on the moon, both to allow for harvesting materials and to act as a launching pad for journeys to the Red Planet.

Confirmation Vote and Political Dynamics

On Wednesday, the U.S. Senate confirmed Isaacman's nomination with a bipartisan vote.

The President first withdrew the nomination in May, referencing a "deep dive of past connections".

At the time, the president was openly clashing with the SpaceX CEO, one of his major contributors, with whom Isaacman has a working relationship.

The new administrator indicates he is now aligned with the administration's goal to mine the moon, putting him at odds with Elon Musk, who has stated that going to the Moon is a distraction from the primary objective of Martian exploration.

Future Direction

In the current global space race, nations are racing to tap into the moon's resources.

“This is not the time for delay but a time for decisive steps because if we lag, if we err, we may not recover, and the implications could change the global dynamics here on our planet,” he told lawmakers earlier this month.

The billionaire entrepreneur sees fostering more industry players as essential for achieving those targets, according to a recently disclosed memo laying out his plan for the agency.

In his Senate hearing, he reaffirmed the strategy, which he drafted when he was initially selected, but noted it was a work in progress.

His support for competition could also lead to tension with Musk. Recently, he praised the award of a lucrative deal to Jeff Bezos's company, which is one of the main challengers of Musk's SpaceX.

In the strategy paper, he recommended the agency should expand collaboration with research institutes, envisioning the agency as a "force multiplier for scientific discovery".

He cited the scheduled 2027 launch of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope as a prime illustration.

"Should we be close to something groundbreaking - like launching Roman - I will explore every option to see it launched, even providing personal financing if that's what it takes to deliver the scientific results," he wrote.

Personal Fortune

According to reports, Isaacman's net worth is valued at approximately $1.2bn, primarily derived from his financial services firm and the divestment of his firm that trained pilots and operated a private fleet of military aircraft.

The top job at NASA will be his initial foray in government service, a contrast to the immediate predecessors who served as head of the agency.

He will take over from Sean Duffy, who has served as interim NASA chief since July.
