The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track

This latest animated series, the newest animated series from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It features our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing backstories for key figures such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.

All in all, the intro appears amazing. However, I felt that an element was lost in the song choice.

This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song created by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the official score of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.

Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. This track that excites you before you start an installment of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.

Of course, Critical Role has stated that the series will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be among these.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
