The Gunners' Disputed Sponsorship Deal with Visit Rwanda Set to End This Coming Year

The North London club has confirmed that its much-debated sponsorship partnership with Visit Rwanda will expire in the coming June.

Background and Scrutiny

The partnership, said to be worth around ÂŁ10 million annually, was initiated six years ago and has since been heavily criticized.

The backlash arises from Rwanda's alleged support for the M23 rebel group in continuing hostilities in the eastern areas of the adjacent DRC.

Months ago, Arsenal was criticized for delivering an "outrageous" snub to the authorities in Congo by failing to convene with Congolese diplomat Thérèse Wagner to address the sponsorship.

Deal Composition and Aims

Visit Rwanda serves as an arm of the the country's development agency, which is a public entity.

There is broad consensus that Arsenal signed and maintained this partnership mainly to grow their fanbase in Africa.

However, the partnership has now terminated after both parties “jointly decided” to part ways.

“Together, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have outperformed the initial objectives of the partnership – supporting environmental protection and sustainable tourism, encouraging numerous followers to visit the nation, and building a solid groundwork for travel industry expansion,” declared an official Arsenal statement.

The statement continued that the partnership has also supported Rwanda's ambition to become an international sporting hub in Africa and welcome more worldwide tournaments while implementing community soccer programs that have helped hundreds of young players and coaches enhance their abilities and promote increased engagement in athletics nationwide.

Executive Perspective and Fan Reaction

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's top executive, described the partnership as a “important voyage” and asserted it had been “advancing” the club's aspirations.

However, this perspective was not shared by a section of Arsenal's fanbase, with the protest movement Gunners for Peace holding rallies outside the Emirates Stadium during the first semi-final encounter in Europe's premier competition against PSG in late April.

Protesters displayed a placard declaring “Terminate the Visit Rwanda Partnership” and provided wristbands to cover up the Visit Rwanda logo on kits.

Broader Context and Other Clubs

During that period, the French champions continued their sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda until 2028.

Meanwhile, Atlético Madrid entered a new agreement for the equivalent timeframe that has resulted in the logo being carried on the Spanish club's male and female kits.
