New York City Mayor Eric Adams Will Support Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race

NYC's current mayor Eric Adams declared his plan to support former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, even after months of strained relations between the two Democratic figures.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Previous Accusations

Only weeks ago, the mayor had strongly criticized Cuomo, describing him as a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” However, in a new development, Mayor Adams made a U-turn, announcing he now plans to support Cuomo in neighborhoods where he maintains significant backing.

“It's essential to mobilize the communities of color that have been affected by gentrification on how important this race is,” the mayor remarked.

Adams continued, “Residents have seen their housing costs rise due to neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those areas, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with community leaders and organizations and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.”

Election Landscape and Current Developments

The election battle has so far been shaped by the contest between the former governor and progressive candidate his main rival, whose rise in the polls has made headlines internationally and represented aspirations for a revitalized leftwing of the Democrats.

During a recent candidate forum, both Mamdani and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa stated they would decline Adams’s endorsement if offered.

Months ago, the mayor had launched his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after facing federal corruption charges which were later dismissed in return for his assistance with federal immigration raids across New York City.

During a unrelated press conference on the same day, Adams responded to reporters asking about the support announcement by saying, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”

This development came a day after the two politicians were seen attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ season opener at the famous arena, which occurred right after a heated candidate debate.
