Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using these drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to original weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
