Democrats Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced fury after the ex-president alleged a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and stated they should be detained and punished "with execution" following their posting of a disputed video.
The Content That Sparked the Debate
The clip, published on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who in the past worked in armed forces or defense capacities.
"As we did, you all made an vow to protect and uphold this founding document," the lawmakers affirmed in the 90-second video. "At present, the threats to our governing document aren't just from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can reject unlawful commands, you can refuse unlawful commands, you have to reject improper directives. No one has to execute directives that break the statutes or our founding principles."
Donald Trump's Angry Response
The clip reportedly trigger a heated reply from the previous commander-in-chief.
On the following morning, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he stated: "This represents really serious, and Risky to our United States. Their comments cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Officials React
Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, Democratic leadership published a joint statement denouncing the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no place in this nation," they stated. "Congress members who appeared in the video all served our nation with exceptional patriotism and honor. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous death threats against members of Congress, and call on Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The opposition officials also said that they had been in contact with security officials "to guarantee the security of these representatives and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these extreme social media posts and recant his dangerous language before he gets someone killed," the announcement stated.
Representatives' Strong Response
The officials who were featured in the video also issued a statement.
"We identify as former service members and security experts who love this United States and swore an pledge to protect and uphold the founding document of the United States," they declared. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we plan to keep it. No threat, coercion, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that fundamental responsibility."
"What's most telling is that the former president deems it liable to punishment by execution for us to repeat the law," they continued. "Military personnel should understand that we have their backs as they carry out their pledge to the founding principles and obligation to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They added: "The entire nation must join forces and denounce the ex-president's requests for our death and partisan aggression. This is a period for ethical certainty."
Further Partisan Responses
The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's statements and published on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the President of the United States is requesting the death of elected officials."
He continued: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this without delay and absolutely."
The Conservative official supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "treason", describing the video as "extremely improper", stating: "This represents very risky, you have prominent officials of the government telling soldiers to defy commands, I think that represents historic in US history."
The Republican leader also according to sources stated to journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the violation of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to examine the wording and determine all that."
Executive Branch Reaction
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when asked by a reporter, "Does the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary responded: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the former president is reacting to," the spokesperson stated. "You have active officials of the federal government who conspired to arrange a video message to personnel of the American armed forces, to active duty service members advising them to defy the president's legal commands."
She stated: "The sanctity of our defense system rests on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is broken, it can result in people getting killed, it can cause disorder, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are essentially encouraging."
