An individual profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro just before it was made public, raising questions about potential gains made from non-public details of American actions.

Changing Odds in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion increased in the time leading up to former President Trump announced on January 3rd that the president had been apprehended.

A particular user, which joined the platform last month and took four positions, all on Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that participants estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

But the market's assessment had climbed to eleven percent by the end of the day and surged in the morning of January 3rd, suggesting a sharp shift in betting activity immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a bet based on non-public details," commented an industry expert.

Several of other platform users also profited significant sums from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Some lawmakers are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation introduced on the start of the week seeks to ban public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

Market Background

Prediction markets have grown significantly in recent years, with users able to wager on everything from elections to political events.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. However it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market arena.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
